Nervous Tissue Bank (BTN) PDF Print

It is not possible to formulate a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease or of a form of parkinsonism, because only autoptic findings make it 100% certain.  The error rate in clinical diagnoses is high; according to the literature, up to 20% of diagnoses can be wrong.

The Data Bank of the ICP Parkinson Institute provides data related to patients with a "probable" diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and the diagnostic error rate is too high for some kinds of research on the disease.  In order to overcome the problem and improve the quality of the data, Nervous Tissue Banks have been founded abroad and now also in Italy, thanks to the sponsorship of the Grigioni Foundation.

Thanks to BTN researchers will have data of higher quality for their studies, as the data will be related to cases with a  "certain", non longer just "probable" diagnosis.

The addition of histological preparations i.e. of the examination of cerebral tissue of the patients increases the value of the data already available in the Clinical Data Banl of the ICP Parkinson Institute enormously.   The availability of more complete and more precise data will enable researchers to perform additional types of research, such as studies on the effects of exposure to environmental toxins and/or genetic mutations, to improve clinical diagnoses and to finally find a cure for Parkinson's disease.
